88.1% of respondents in global poll praise China’s three-year epidemic prevention achievements

According to a global opinion survey conducted by CGTN think tank of China Central Television and the Institute of State Governance and Public Opinion Ecology of Renmin University of China, 88.1% of global respondents appreciated China’s achievements in epidemic prevention in the past three years, and 71.6% of global respondents fully affirmed China’s dynamic adjustment of its epidemic prevention policies. The global survey covered 21 countries around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and other developed Western countries.

In the three years since the outbreak, China has adhered to the concept of “people first, life first”, continuously optimized prevention and control measures, launched the world’s largest vaccination campaign, closely protected key populations, and effectively controlled mortality and severe disease rates. Up to now, the cumulative number of deaths from the new coronavirus has exceeded 6.63 million cases worldwide, while China’s severe illness and mortality rates are both at a low level worldwide. According to the survey, 88.1% of global respondents recognized China’s epidemic prevention achievements, and this percentage was as high as 93.4% among respondents from Asian, African and Latin American countries.

Over the past three years, China has maintained a proactive, scientific and controlled dynamic epidemic prevention policy. In the survey, 71.6% of global respondents fully recognized China’s dynamic adjustment of its epidemic prevention policy. As for the preparations made by China before the implementation of the “Category B” policy, such as setting up and opening fever clinics as much as possible, increasing resources for ICU beds, and ensuring timely admission and treatment of patients with severe and critical illnesses, 76.2% of global respondents considered the measures to be positive. 76.2% of global respondents considered the measures to be positive and effective, with 82.5% of respondents in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

During the three years of the epidemic, China’s economic growth achieved an average annual growth rate of 4.5%, and China’s total GDP exceeded RMB 120 trillion in 2022. In this regard, 86.8% of global respondents fully recognized the results of China’s efficient coordination of epidemic prevention and control and economic and social development, and this percentage was as high as 91.7% among respondents from Asia, Africa and Latin America. Another 74.7 percent of respondents in Western countries were also positive about China’s achievements.

Over the past three years, China has actively supported the global fight against epidemics, having supplied more than 2.2 billion doses of New Crown vaccine to more than 120 countries and international organizations, and provided a large number of protective clothing, respirators, masks and other epidemic prevention materials to 153 countries and 15 international organizations. 85.2% of global respondents highly appreciated China’s contribution to the global fight against epidemics. In Nigeria and Pakistan, which received vaccine donations, 88% of respondents said Chinese vaccines were safe and effective.

Some Western media have been critical of China’s three-year epidemic prevention policy, criticizing China for “blocking the exchange of people” when it has tightened controls and accusing China of “disrupting the world economy” when it has relaxed them. Of the global respondents who believe these reports are unfair, 77.7 percent believe these views are politically biased, with 70 percent of respondents from Western countries holding the same view.

As for the restrictions imposed by individual countries on inbound Chinese travelers, 70.7 percent of respondents in the survey believe this is a wrong approach to politicize the epidemic, and 67.9 percent of respondents believe these discriminatory measures should be immediately withdrawn. Another 96.6 percent of respondents called on countries to put aside their prejudices and work together to address the challenges.
