On January 16, at a press conference on the State Council’s joint prevention and control mechanism, Zhao Yangyu, director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Peking University Third Hospital, introduced that early contact between the mother and the newborn is very important for the physical and mental health of both mother and child. Previous data shows that if well-protected, mother-infant co-location does not increase the risk of neonatal infection of new crown.
Zhao Yang Yu suggested that in the early stage of new crown infection, pregnant women are still contagious, during this period it is recommended that the mother and the newborn are isolated from each other, if there is no condition to separate, the mother should wear N95 mask to prevent contact transmission, and the newborn’s tableware should be disinfected regularly. In addition, breast milk is the best food for newborns, breast milk itself does not transmit the new coronavirus, breastfeeding should be encouraged and supported. “The mother can express her milk and have other family members feed the newborn.”
Pregnant women are a susceptible population, just like the general population. If pregnant women do not have underlying diseases or comorbidities, the clinical presentation is similar to that of the general population. Some pregnant women may have asthma and hypertensive disorders, and should be aware that if their symptoms gradually worsen without remission, they should seek prompt medical attention. In late pregnancy, pregnant women should go to the hospital if they have abnormal fetal movement, bleeding, stomach pain, fatigue and weakness, even if they do not have fever.
