Hohhot reported 121 confirmed cases in 5 days, including the first case of Omicron BF.7
According to data released by Inner Mongolia on Oct. 3, on Oct. 2, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region reported 103 new cases of indigenous infection, including 98 cases in Hohhot. According to data from the Hohhot CDC, as of 24:00 on October 2, Hohhot has reported a total of 121 confirmed cases and 29 asymptomatic infections in 5 days.
The first confirmed case in Hohhot was sequenced as the BF.7 (BA.5.2.1.7) evolutionary branch of the Omicron mutant strain, according to information from the People’s Daily Health Client, which found that the BF.7 evolutionary branch of the Omicron mutant strain had not been reported in China before.
What is the origin of BF.7? According to the World Health Organization, the BF.7 variant is a subline of the Omicron BA.5 variant, and the number of related cases reported in Europe and the United States is increasing in many places.
“WHO is currently tracking approximately 200 mutant strains of the Omicron subline. Global health agencies are closely monitoring mutant strains such as Omicron BA.2.75, BF.7 and BA.4.6 that have begun to spread globally.” Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical lead for Covid-19, said at a news conference held on Sept. 22 local time.
“The fact that BF.7 infections have the same growth advantage in multiple countries gives us reason to believe that BF.7 is taking hold and that it may be more transmissible than the parent strain BA.5.” Dr. Stuart Ray, associate medical director of the Johns Hopkins University Department of Medicine, said in a previous interview with Fortune magazine.
To date, there are nine high-risk areas and four medium-risk areas in Hohhot. The current round of epidemic coincides with the National Day holiday, Hohhot City advocates that citizens do not leave Hohhot non-essential, local holiday, home leisure, to prevent the spillover of the epidemic.
