According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, Luo Yijun, deputy head of the medical response team at the Taiwan Regional Epidemic Command Center, announced today (30) that the latest 125 confirmed cases of Omicron have been sequenced, with the local BA.2.75 emerging strain exceeding half for the first time and possibly replacing BA.5 as the dominant strain. It may have replaced BA.5 as the dominant strain in Taiwan recently.

The Taiwan Epidemic Command Center announced the latest genetic sequencing results of various mutated strains of Omicron, with 85 cases imported from abroad and 40 local cases. For local cases, there were 21 cases (53%) of the mutant strain BA.2.75, 14 cases (35%) of BA.5, and 5 cases (13%) of BQ.1.

The strain BA2.75 is a branch of BA.2, which has immune escape characteristics, but what we need to worry about at this stage are other emerging strains, such as BQ.1 and XBB, and various mutant strains have increased slightly during the Spring Festival.

As for the recent media reports of the “two-headed dog” CH.1.1 virus, Luo Yijun explained that the CH.1.1 strain is also a type of BA.2.75, which was prevalent in New Zealand and Australia last year, and sporadic cases have been detected on the island since November 20 last year, including four local cases from outside Japan and South Korea. There were two imported cases each from Japan and Korea, and one imported case each from New Zealand and Singapore, all of which were mild cases.
