UK government launches surveillance program, will select some passengers from China to implement voluntary nucleic acid testing

The UK Health and Safety Executive (UKHSA) launched a surveillance program on January 8 local time, and will select some passengers arriving from China (Heathrow arrivals only) for voluntary new crown nucleic acid testing, according to a written statement to Parliament posted on the UK government’s website on January 9. All positive samples will be sent for sequencing and analysis to enhance existing measures to monitor for new mutations of the virus.
According to the statement, the UK government recognizes the potential impact of the temporary health measures on businesses and passengers and is still continuously assessing the situation.
The UK Department of Health and Social Security has announced on December 30 last year that from January 5, those entering the UK directly or indirectly from mainland China will be required to show proof of negative nucleic acid within 48 hours before boarding, and the policy also applies to transit passengers.
According to the Independent, the British government previously said that those who tested positive did not need to enter hotels for isolation or self-isolation.
