How to relieve eye symptoms after a new crown infection
Recently, some people have reported eye soreness, redness, tearing and even blurred vision after being infected with the new coronavirus.
Previously, the latest research published in Nature Communications showed that the new coronavirus can cause eye discomfort and retinal inflammation. And a large prospective observational study published in The Lancet also showed that even after vaccination, 24.8%-27.7% of people infected with Neocrown still experienced sore eyes.
Ocular surface inflammation can be relieved with eye drops
“If there is only dryness of the conjunctiva and other ocular surface tissues or other symptoms of conjunctivitis, you can use some moistening eye drops such as sodium glassate and artificial tears, or you can use some antiviral eye drops such as ganciclovir drops, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drops to relieve symptoms.” Chen Youxin, director of ophthalmology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, said discomfort on the eye surface does not usually lead to vision loss, but if fundus lesions such as acute macular retinopathy occur, they can lead to impaired vision in severe cases and require high vigilance and active prevention.
“After the development of fundus lesions, hormone therapy is usually used after the patient’s viral test turns negative, supplemented by local neurotrophic support and antioxidant-protective medication.” Chen Youxin said.
Blurred vision requires prompt medical attention
Chen Youxin introduced, so far, there is no drug specifically for the new crown virus eye infection, to prevent the new crown infection brought about by eye discomfort, the most important thing is to strengthen their own protection. “For example, wear a good mask when you go out, good hand hygiene, keep social distance, these are very important means. In addition, health care workers or the general population can also wear face masks and protective glasses, etc. when going to hospitals and other places.” From a clinical point of view, most patients with mild optic nerve damage can recover better, Chen Youxin said.
Chen Youxin reminded that eye infections are most likely to occur 15 days-2 months after a new crown infection or symptom onset. If symptoms such as blurred vision and eye pain occur at this time, you need to pay attention and seek prompt medical attention.
