Wang Guiqiang, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Peking University First Hospital, responded that the pathogenicity of Oncoron has decreased significantly, but some patients still have clinical symptoms after infection, including fever, muscle and joint pain, sore throat and other manifestations, which can seriously affect the quality of life and normal work. Although Omicron is currently highly contagious and the pressure on prevention and control is high, we still hope to keep the epidemic from a short period of mass outbreak, because once a large number of patients appear in a short period of time, the whole social order and livelihood will be seriously affected. At the same time, it will also cause great pressure and even crowding on medical institutions, affecting the treatment of daily acute and critical patients in medical institutions. Although Omicron is highly contagious and most of the infections are self-limiting after infection, and the pathogenicity or severity is relatively low, we do not advocate or recommend intentional infection.

In this context, we also emphasize that the elderly, those with underlying diseases, especially those who have not been vaccinated, must be well protected from infection during the first peak of the epidemic. In this epidemic peak infection, there may be uneven distribution of medical resources or crowding problems, resulting in serious patients not being treated in a timely and effective manner, we still hope that these elderly people do a good job of protection, including elderly people in homes for the elderly and those with underlying diseases who are bedridden, we should also pay special attention to avoid infection. At the same time, those who have not been vaccinated should continue to be vaccinated.

It is a general rule that during the current phase of rapid growth of the first round of the epidemic, the rapid rise will slow down as time passes and the number of infections increases. However, after a period of time, with large-scale social activities, including the Spring Festival or various social events, there may be a new round of outbreaks, which will occur in waves, and eventually a certain herd immunity barrier may be formed, and the incidence will drop significantly. We hope that there will be no large-scale outbreaks of the epidemic, which is our main recommendation at this time.
