“It feels pretty good.” Ms. Zhang, a 67-year-old citizen, shared with relief after receiving the recombinant novel coronavirus vaccine (Sf9 cells) at about 9:15 a.m. on Jan. 13 at the North District of Fangcao Community Health Service Center in Chengdu’s High-tech District. “There’s nothing uncomfortable now.” Ms. Wei, 42, said she had not been infected, and after learning that she could get a second booster shot, a friend recommended the West China Hospital/Wesco Biological Research and Development vaccine, “I also got the first three shots of Chengdu Biological (inactivated vaccine), and I have confidence in our Chengdu-made vaccine.”
Ms. Zhang was vaccinated with the recombinant new coronavirus protein vaccine (Sf9 cells) developed by West China Hospital of Sichuan University/Wesco Biologicals, and this “Chengdu-made” new coronavirus vaccine was given in Chengdu as the second booster dose.
On December 14, 2022, the Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism of the State Council issued the “Notice on the Issuance of the Implementation Plan of the Second Dose of New Coronavirus Vaccine Booster Vaccination”, which included “3 doses of inactivated vaccine + 1 dose of Chengdu Wisk recombinant new coronavirus vaccine (sf9 cells)” in the vaccine selection package.
On December 5, 2022, the recombinant new coronavirus protein vaccine (Sf9 cells) developed by West China Hospital of Sichuan University was approved for emergency use by the relevant national authorities. This is the first recombinant protein novel coronavirus protein vaccine produced by the insect cell technology platform approved for emergency use in China, and the first new coronavirus vaccine approved for emergency use led by a hospital in China.
Li Shuangqing, director of the Department of Family Medicine at West China Hospital of Sichuan University, said that according to the Implementation Plan promulgated by the state, at this stage, a second dose of booster immunization can be carried out in people at high risk of infection, elderly people over 60 years old, people with more serious underlying diseases and people with low immunity, based on the first dose of booster immunization. As for the time interval, according to the current technical guidelines for vaccination against the new coronavirus, the time interval between the second booster dose and the first booster dose is more than 6 months.
How should the public choose from a variety of booster vaccination strategies for the new coronavirus vaccine? The National Implementation Plan clearly states that in terms of vaccine selection, all vaccines approved for conditional listing or emergency use can be used for the second dose of booster immunization. Priority will be given to sequential booster immunizations or second dose booster immunizations with vaccines containing Omicron strains or with good cross-immunity to Omicron strains.
What do you need to pay attention to before vaccination? Chief Bai Lin, head of the immunization section at Fangcao Community Health Service Center in Chengdu High-Tech District, said that first, it is important to determine whether you can be vaccinated. For example, is the interval between the second booster dose and the first booster dose more than 6 months? Have you recently been infected with the new coronavirus? The first thing you need to do is to make sure that you are ready to get the second dose of booster shots. Second, pay attention to personal protection and wear a mask when you come for vaccination. Thirdly, as the weather has been cold recently, residents are reminded to wear loose clothing as much as possible on the day of vaccination to facilitate exposure of the vaccination site.
It is understood that the first doses of Wisk vaccine have arrived and the vaccination is being rolled out one after another, so people in need can consult their local community health service centers.
